GREEK RUGS SPARTA

Dimitris (Dimitrios) Efraimoglou (1900), who was  born in Sparta Pisidias in Turkey and his son Simos (Symeon), was one of the pioneers in carpet weaving in Greece. They have been honored many times by state officials for the contribution in the Greek handmade carpet art and especially for the quality “Sparta carpets”

Sparta of Pisidia (Isparta) was one of the last areas to develop a carpet weaving tradition, in which the Greek Orthodox inhabitants of the city played a very important role, both in the organization of production and in the provision of labour.

Sparta, Sivas, Seljuk handmade carpets were characterized for their stable quality, which enhanced their commercial value. The type of carpets, is carpet woven in sophisticated looms with double fabrics (two edge threads), while its designs are the well-known Asia Minor patterns with some particular preference in the designs of the carpets type "Usak" with central medallion or otherwise known as French designs with decorated corners with cheerful and bright colors. Slowly the natural colors were replaced by chemical dyes for more stable colors, while the exclusive use of sheep's wool gave way to a combination: for weft they used wool, while for warp cotton or flax.

The designs were drowned on a millimeter paper (every small quarter one knot) by special designers.  Inspired by the culture of the time, the workers gave life to the standing clay and with a lot of time created masterpieces that passed their DNA from generation to generation. They were reading the drawing (knots) as a musician reads the key notes in pentagram. They usually worked in organized carpet warehouses as they were singing during weaving or in the form of housework in their home on the employer's account who provided all the necessary materials, in vertical looms.

Great  volume of Spartalidis refugees and other from Pisidia region was settled in Podarades area, creating today’s New Ionia Athens municipality . The choice of the area was not random, as the area was providing enough water from the Podoniftis river, which made it suitable for carpet and textile activities and weaving.

Depending on the density of the carpet we categorized the quality established over the years, so the Sparta quality carpets have about 70000-90000 knots per square meter. Seljuk’s reach 125000 knots /M2 and Sivas 170000 knots per square meter. All Greek carpet quality with asymmetric double-knot giordes or single type called “Sine”. The denser the quality, the better the detail. Of course, when we go up in density, finer materials needed and the cost of weaving goes up accordingly.

A weaver can weave between 7000 to 10000 knots a day according to her experience. To calculate the number of knots in a carpet, we measured the knots on the back side at 10 centimeters vertically and 10 centimeters horizontally (L) and then multiply  by 1000 i.e., 8 x 9 = 72, 72x1000 =72000 knots per square meter. (If necessary with the help of a magnifying tool and a ruler tool)

Thousands of Sparta and Sivas carpets have dressed countless households as well as professional offices and large organizations. We see them even today decorating in many countries giving and preserving the master of art and Greek tradition. They are inherited from generation to generation by transferring the Greek values with their designs and colors. Carpets that can match all decorative requirements and demands.

The company Efraimoglou is proud to present and offer Greek handmade carpets of Sparta, Sivas and Seljuk quality in a wide variety of colors and designs up to 23 square meters. Remain a very good investment in all aspects, economic aesthetic and for collectors since the production of such carpets has now stopped and are very rare to find.
